Experience

I have always had an interest in advising and educating people and leading fellow peers and employees. In high school, I worked as a homeroom mentor, where I advised freshmen on high school and college concerns, reviewed their writing and answered their academic questions, and helped the teacher organize paperwork and plan activities. The National Honor Society also provided me with tutoring experience, with students at my high school and those at a nearby middle school. During my senior year, I became involved in the Inclusion Aid Program, where I allocated one of my course slots to tutoring an individual student in the Special Education Program. I also held many leadership roles during my high school career that entailed listening to the student population and addressing their concerns, working with faculty within the school and throughout the state, and planning fundraisers and social events. These positions included Student Government Delegate and Vice President, Student Council Member, President, and Vice President, and National Honor Society Member and Vice President. In college, I pursued my interests in reading, writing, and communication, and explored my interest in teaching through coursework and internships. I have tutored students at the Middle School, High School, and College level, and I have extensive experience as a nanny. I am always eager for the chance to work with diverse groups of people in new settings and gain further insight that will gear me towards my future ambitions Member of The Jiménez-Porter Writers' House, a Living and Learning Program at The University of Maryland (Fall 2011- Spring 2012) Beginning Fiction Workshop (Fall 2009), Intermediate Fiction Workshop (Spring 2010), Advanced Fiction Workshop (Fall 2011) -Developed active reading, writing, and editing skills through written assignments and creative fiction pieces -Examined, critiqued, and discussed the works of selected authors and fellow peers -Listened to feedback from students and instructors and reviewed their written critiques during the revision process University of Maryland Writing Center Internship, Writing Tutor (Fall 2011) -Listened to students and offered writing advise via oral and written communication strategies Special Topics in Teacher Education: Exploring Teaching as a Career (Spring 2010) -Assessed and discussed various teaching methods and educational issues in class -Tutored students on a variety of subjects at John F. Hobbies

I enjoy reading and writing, and I have an open-minded, creative personality. I have a wide range of experience in working with people of many different ages-- from infancy to adulthood. This past summer, my sister entrusted me with the role of her nanny for her one-year old son, Adam. The job entailed hours anywhere between 5am-9pm during the week and occasional weekends, but for me this experience went far beyond that of a job. I have worked with younger kids before in middle school and high school tutoring programs, but this was a different experience. I worked with my nephew every day, ensuring he read, write, and engage in fun yet beneficial activities. My goal was to enrich his knowledge of his surroundings, letters, numbers, and other areas, so that I could offer him the chance to develop his talents, abilities, and knowledge that he already possessed. After having tutored a diverse range of students, I have gained immense experience in how to communicate with others and help them as best as possible. I come from a large family of six myself, so I have had much experience in social-relations, teamwork, resolving conflicts, and adequately voicing and responding to opinions, ideas, etc.
